Summer is fast-approaching, which means it’s time to get your garden in order. Whether you plan to relax in the yard or you have barbecues with your friends every weekend, you want a space that you can enjoy. Part of that means properly caring for your garden. Tis the season… for gardening. The change in climate will allow your flowers and plants to blossom, which is why we have put together some helpful top tips to help you create a great summer garden.

Weed Planning

Yes, you should plan for them. They’re inevitable, even in the most carefully kept gardens. The weeds creep up as soon as the weather starts to get warm so, you can actively weed often and also deter them from growing. You can apply mulch and use weed mats to help deter them. This should reduce the time you spend on your knees, breaking your back to get rid of them.

Fertilization & Planting

There are so many different options for you to choose from but, it’s important to choose the right one for your soil. In New Jersey, there are different soil types by region so, be sure to check into yours to ensure that you have the right fertilizer. The purpose of fertilizer is to provide your soil with any nutrients that it might be missing – all of which is going to improve your chances at a successful planting.

When it comes to choosing what vegetables to plant, there are certain options which do better in the warmer months. So, plant squash, watermelon, corn, beans, peppers, celery, and zucchini.

Preparation of Soil

The soil that you want for a thriving garden is one that will allow roots to grow quickly and spread. One of the ways you can ensure this describes your soil is to prepare it through tilling. A tiller will help break up soil, which allows for roots to grow, as well as for the water and nutrients to spread evenly throughout the soil. Before you start the tilling process, you should check to make sure there are no pipes or utility lines beneath the soil that you can damage.

General Maintenance

As the foliage from your spring bulbs dies off, you’ll need to remove dead leaves. If you see signs of yellowing, then immediately remove the leaves or foliage to ensure that infection can’t spread else2where. Green leaves don’t need to be removed. If your summer plants are losing flowers or buds then it’s a sign of them drying out. This is fairly common when you grow plants in containers. The best way to counteract this issue is to apply mulch and then water (deeply) twice a week in the hottest, driest weather.

Speaking of potted plants, as they are likely to overheat, you should position them away from the western sun. When you have plants like this standing in water you are inviting both mosquitoes and root rot. So, instead, you can fill the sauces with sand and keep it moist. This will keep your plants cool and healthy.

It’s also a good idea to tackle your gardening and watering in the evening hours when it’s cooler – happy gardening!
